Are you grieving the seasons that feel...

“I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you.”

Joel 2:25 (ESV)

Today's Reflection

The Redeemed Years 🕰️

Simon stared at the glossy cardstock of his college alumni newsletter, tracing the list of his former classmates’ promotions and growing families. He had spent the last eight years quietly navigating a debilitating chronic illness, watching from the sidelines while everyone else seemed to sprint ahead. He slid the magazine across the diner table and rubbed his temples.

His friend, Seth, pushed aside his plate and glanced at the open page. “Comparing timelines again?”

Simon let out a short laugh, staring out the window at the passing traffic. “It’s hard not to. I feel like I just woke up from a decade-long detour. I can’t help but think about all the years I lost to hospital waiting rooms.”

Seth slid the newsletter face down and looked him in the eye. “You didn’t lose them, Simon. You were fighting a battle they didn’t have to fight. That doesn’t make your time wasted.”

Do you have your own version of Simon’s missing decade? When we look back at seasons swallowed by illness, grief, or sheer daily survival, it is easy to tally up that time as permanently lost. We view those years as a barren wasteland, a deficit we can never earn back. But God’s economy operates differently than ours. In Joel, God doesn’t just promise to stop the devastation of the locusts; He promises to actively restore the years they consumed. He takes the seasons that felt empty, broken, or delayed and weaves their quiet lessons into a foundation far richer than an uninterrupted timeline. Your waiting rooms and detours were not wasted space. God is redeeming those quiet battles, using them to cultivate a depth of empathy and endurance that a smooth path never could.

Can you pray with me?

Lord, thank You that no season is ever wasted in Your hands. When I look back at the years that feel eaten away by illness, grief, or endless waiting, help me to trust Your promise of deep restoration. Redeem my detours, and use the quiet battles I’ve fought to build something beautiful and lasting in my life. Amen.
