The Rugged Anchor 🌱
Today’s Word: 📖 “Do not be sad, because the joy you have in the Lord will make you strong.” — Nehemiah 8:10 (GNT)
Caleb stood in the community garden, his boots sinking into the thick mud. A fierce summer storm had just leveled weeks of backbreaking labor. Snapped wooden trellises and crushed tomato vines lay scattered across the plots. He dropped a heavy tarp, wiping rain from his brow.
“Is it even worth starting over?” he muttered.
His older neighbor, Elias, walked up slowly, carrying two thermoses of coffee. He handed one to Caleb, surveying the wreckage. “It looks like a total loss right now, I know,” Elias said gently, patting Caleb’s shoulder. “But the soil is still good. We don’t rebuild on our own steam. We find our joy in the Maker of the garden, and that gives us the muscle for tomorrow.”
Why is our first instinct to measure our strength by how well our circumstances are holding together? When sudden storms level our plans or emotional reserves, we often sink into paralyzing grief. We mistakenly believe joy is a fragile emotion, dependent on sunny skies and perfect outcomes. But biblical joy is a rugged, defiant anchor. The joy of the Lord doesn’t ignore the mud or the broken pieces; it looks past them to the unwavering goodness of God. When you realize His love remains intact even when your plans collapse, that joy becomes the exact fuel you need to stand back up.
Set aside the heavy burden of your disappointments for just a moment, and pray with me:
Dear Lord Jesus, when the storms of life leave me standing in the mud of my broken plans, help me to look up and find my joy in You. Infuse my exhausted spirit with Your defiant strength, reminding me that Your goodness outlasts every setback. Amen.
