The Folded Jacket 🧥
Today’s Word: 📖 “Remember that the LORD your God is the only God and that he is faithful.” — Deuteronomy 7:9 (GNT)
Natalie rested her forehead against the cool enamel of the washing machine, the rhythmic hum of the spin cycle vibrating against her skin. In her hands, she clutched a stack of freshly laundered toddler clothes—outfits they had bought for a foster placement that had abruptly fallen through that afternoon.
Her husband, Julian, leaned against the doorframe, watching her gently fold a tiny denim jacket. “You don’t have to put all of those away tonight, Nat,” he said softly.
Natalie traced the small brass buttons, her vision blurring with unshed tears. “I just don’t understand. We did everything right, we prepared our home, and now it’s just empty. It feels like God broke a promise.”
Julian walked over and placed a steady hand on her shoulder. “The placement fell through, but God hasn’t fallen through. His faithfulness isn’t measured by a single afternoon.”
Have you ever stood holding the folded pieces of a broken plan, wondering if God has suddenly abandoned His promises to you?
When a deeply desired outcome slips through our fingers—a failed adoption, a lost job opportunity, or a sudden, painful change in our life trajectory—the resulting grief can easily morph into profound doubt. We look at the empty spaces in our homes or our calendars and assume God has forgotten us, or worse, that He is unreliable. But Deuteronomy reminds us of a foundational truth that anchors us when our circumstances crumble: the Lord our God is the only God, and He is inherently faithful. His faithfulness does not mean we will never experience the pain of a closed door or a shattered expectation. Rather, it means His character remains steadfast, and His ultimate, redemptive plans for us are not derailed by earthly setbacks. He is still working, even when all we hold is an unfulfilled dream.
If your heart is aching over a sudden disappointment today, please know that God sees your tears and holds your future securely. Let’s bring our broken plans to the One who never fails us, and pray together:
Lord, my hands feel so empty right now, and I am struggling to understand why this door was closed. When I am holding the folded pieces of a plan that fell apart, please remind my aching heart that Your faithfulness is not broken. Help me to trust that You are still working in the empty spaces of my life, and give me the peace to rely on Your steadfast love when nothing else makes sense. Amen.
