When the emperor ordered the census, it must have caused a great deal of commotion throughout the nation, as every citizen was required to travel to their ancestral home. There were no faster forms of transportation like there are today, and there were no other options for registering from a remote location. It would have been a nightmare for Mary to even consider traveling at that point in her pregnancy. The journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem will take a minimum of four days. Joseph would have been in a difficult position if he had to decide whether to leave Mary behind, disobey the emperor’s command, or take Mary to the census registration. Joseph, being a righteous man, resolved to live up to his reputation and obey the laws of the land. As stated in Romans 13:1, he submitted to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. Yes! He took Mary along with him and went to Bethlehem. Even though the Bible does not give any more information regarding their journey, I have no doubt that it was difficult for both of them. However, as a family, they prioritized obeying the law despite their personal difficulties.Do you follow the rules of the land? How submissive are you to the governing authorities? Set a good example for others by genuinely abiding by all the regulations, both big and small. That will be an excellent testimony and source of inspiration for others.
